Clinical and species profile of dermatophytosis in tertiary healthcare centre

Dermatophytosis is the major health problem in worldwide. The three genera of dermatophytes are Microsporum, Trichophyton and Epidermophyton. Among them, Trichophyton spp are the predominant ones causing infection and also associated with recurrence and resistance to antifungal therapy. The dermatophytic infections affect all age groups. The primary aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of dermatophytosis in SRM MCH & RC between JAN 2017- JAN 2018. This study also aims to study the trend of infections in the adult and paediatric age groups and to observe whether there is any impact of seasonal variation in the distribution of infections. A total of 345 samples were collected from clinically suspected dermatophytosis. Direct microscopy by KOH and culture on SDA with and without antibiotics, and DTM were done.

Prevalence and molecular characterization of scrub typhus in sub-urban regions of Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, India

Scrub typhus is one of the most under-diagnosed and under-reported febrile illnesses. Hence, a study was conducted to diagnose the scrub typhus by using Weil Felix test (WF), Immuno-Chromatographic Test (ICT) and nested PCR (N-PCR). The primer pairs encoding the 56-KDa antigen were used for confirmation of Orientia tsutsugamushi. Serotype-specific primers were used for identification of Gilliam, Karp, Kato, Kawasaki and Kuroki strains. Out of the 46 blood samples collected from suspected human patients, 13 were found serologically positive by both WF and ICT and 12 by N-PCR. All the 12 NPCR positive samples were found positive for Karp strain. None of the rat blood samples were positive for O. tsutsugamushi.

Isolation and speciation of candida from various clinical samples in a tertiary care hospital

Infections due to Candida species and other fungi have increased dramatically in recent years. Candida isolates from various clinical samples were collected and inoculated on SDA. Speciation was done by Germ tube test, Hichrom agar, and morphology on corn meal with Tween 80. 64 were culture positive. Of this, 47(73%) C. albicans and 17 (27%) non albicans Candida were isolated. Hichrom agar can be used for rapid, presumptive identification of Candida species.

Compositional quality of milk and its contaminants on physical and chemical concern: A review

India is a highest milk producer. Whereas the concept of qualitative milk for consumer is the most valuable things related to milk production and its processing. The quality of raw milk is the primary factor determining the quality of milk products. Good quality raw milk has to be free of debris and sediment; free of off-flavours and abnormal colour and odour; low in bacterial count; free of chemicals (e.g., antibiotics, detergents); and of normal composition and acidity.

A review on heavy metal residues in Indian milk and their impact on human health

In recent scenario due to indiscriminate human activities the heavy metal pollution is very much concerned because of their toxicity for animal and human beings and their lack of biodegradability. Heavy metal toxicity is linked with a number of diseases but the severity of situation multiplies too many folds if these heavy metals are found in milk, which is the basic food item of vulnerable age group of people. Heavy metal when reaches human and animal body through various absorption pathways such as direct ingestion, dermal contact, diet through the soil-food chain, inhalation and oral intake may seriously affect their health. Contamination of environment leads to contamination of food chain, which the main rout the entry of heavy metal in the animal body which ultimately causes contamination of milk and animal originated food.

A study on antimicrobial properties and medicinal value of Adhatoda vasica, Centella asiatica, Paederia foetida, Nyctanthes arbor-tristis, Ocimum tenuiflorum

The use of various herbal remedies and preparations are described throughout human history representing the origin of modern medicine. Herbal medicine is also called botanical medicine or phyto-medicine, and is defined as the use whole plants or part of plants to prevent or treat illness. Medicinal plants constitute an important component of flora and are widely distributed in India. The pharmacological evaluation of substances from plants is an established method for the identification of lead compounds which can leads to the development of novel and safe medicinal agents. The importance of medicinal plants and traditional health systems in solving the health care problems of the world is gaining increasing attention.

Bacteriological spectrum and their anti-microbial susceptibility pattern in diabetic ulcer patients attending the tertiary care hospital to facilitate the reduction in morbidity and amputation

Diabetes Mellitus is a group of metabolic disorder in which there is increase in blood glucose over a prolonged period. Out of the complications, Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is a major medical, social, and economic problems and is the leading cause of hospitalization for patients with diabetes. Escherichia coli, Proteus spp., Pseudomonas spp., Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus spp., are reported as frequent organism isolated from cases of diabetic foot infections. Proper management of these infections requires appropriate antibiotic selection following antimicrobial susceptibility results. This study aims at evaluation of the clinical and the Microbial characteristics of diabetic foot infection in the patients in and around Kanyakumari, Tamilnadu and the antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of the isolated bacteria.

Antagonistic antibacterial effect of betel and red betel combination against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria

Treatment with a combination of drugs has been used as an approach to overcome bacterial resistance. The combination of compounds can have synergistic, addictive, or antagonistic effects. The synergistic effect of antibacterial compounds combined is expected to increase antibacterial activity so as to prevent the occurrence of resistance. Betel (Piper betle L.) and red betel (Piper crocatum Ruiz & Pav.) leaves have antibacterial activity. This study compared the antibacterial activity of betel, red betel, to the combinations of betel and red betel.

‘Spirulina’ as an additive for better nutrition

The snacks were prepared by using spirulina as an ingredient with different concentrations. Proximate composition analysis was done to estimate moisture, protein, fat, carbohydrate, ash and energy content of the snacks. Nutritional value of the snacks was found to be increased with increase in the concentration of the spirulina. Organoleptic evaluation led to selection of 5% concentration of spirulina to be better when compared with 10% and 15%. Addition of spirulina not only increased the nutritional value of the product but also influenced the textural properties and quality characteristics.

Virus – The biological brain twister

Viruses are intracellular pathogens that bind to specific receptor molecules on the surface of the target cells for their entry to initiate infection. They exist as lifeless independent particles prior to their invasion of host cells which were subsequently infected due to virus. These parasitic particles find significant importance in the field of genetics, molecular and cell biology as they paved way for major advancement in human health aspects. In numerous researches and discussions were underway on these entities as of whether they belong to the realm of living organisms or not.

Prevalence of mupirocin resistance in methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from a tertiary care hospital

Mupirocin is a topical antibiotic that has been used extensively for treating methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) associated infections. However, the prevalence of resistance to mupirocin is being increasingly found due to its irrational and widespread use. Retapamulin: a pleuromutilin antibacterial agent is an effective topical antibiotic against these resistant strains. This study was carried out to determine the rates of resistance to mupirocin in MRSA isolates in our patient population, and to estimate the association of such resistance and resistance to other classes of antimicrobial agents in order to consider the effect of the use of mupirocin on the selection of antimicrobial resistant strains.
