INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVES ON WATER QUALITY MANAGEMENT AND POLLUTANT CONTROL

The level of surface water quality protection is variable around the world in large part due to the relative effectiveness of environmental regulation and the degree to which science influences the regulatory process. In the United States, at the federal level, the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) has been an effective policy and water quality management tool for dealing with both point source and non-point source pollution. The TMDL provides a rational framework for esti‐ mating the assimilative capacity of the receiving water body for certain contaminants and ap‐ plying factors of safety and incorporating acceptable levels of water quality criteria violation - provided...

OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY

In 1991, optical coherence tomography (OCT) was initially introduced to image the transpar‐ ent tissue of eyes at a level of resolution significantly greater than conventional ultrasound technique. OCT uses infrared light to produce images on a micrometer scale. The intensity of the reflected light is displayed as a false color or grey scale image. OCT imaging is analo‐ gous to ultrasound B mode imaging, except that it performs imaging by measuring the in‐ tensity of reflected or back scattered light rather than acoustic...

ORBITAL INTEGRALS ON  REDUCTIVE LIE GROUPS  AND THEIR ALGEBRAS

In the study of the theory of irreducible unitary representations, is necessary to analyze and demonstrate diverse results on integral orbital of functions belonging to the cohomology Hi (g, K; V  V*), and that it is wanted they belong to the L2(G)-cohomology of their reducible unitary representations called discrete series. Then is necessary consider the Frèchet space I(G), and analyze the 2-integrability to the fibers of the space G/K, in spaces or locally compact components of G/K. For it will be useful the invariance of the corresponding measures of Haar under the actions of Ad(G), and the...

Surface Chemistry

Carbon-based nanoparticles and nanostructures, such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), have drawn great attention in both academia and industry due to their wide potential applica‐ tions. Owing to their well-defined one-dimensional (1D) interior, CNTs serve as desirable materials for encapsulating molecules, such as water [1-4], ionic liquid [5], drug molecules [6], and biomolecules [7]. The nanoscale confinement of CNTs have considerable impact on the inner molecules, including changes in their structure, size distribution, surface area, and dynamics, thus leading to many interesting and striking properties that are quite different from those in bulk [1-5, 7-9]. For example, nanoscale confinement of CNTs can give rise to ordered structure and extra-fast...

PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF CARBON NANOTUBES

Carbon nanotubes are rolled up graphene sheets with a quasi-one-dimensional structure of nanometer-scale diameters. More than twenty years have passed since the pioneering work on carbon nanotubes by Prof. Iijima in 1991. During all these years, carbon nanotubes have at‐ tracted a lot of attention from physicists, chemists, material scientists, and electronic device engineers because of their excellent structural, electronic, optical, chemical, and mechanical properties. Most of these unique properties mainly originate in the parent material, graphene, which has also been very intensively studied as a Dirac Fermion system in more recent years. Carbon nanotube research, especially that aiming at industrial applications is becoming more important, and...

PIEZOELECTRIC MATERIALS AND DEVICES- PRACTICE AND APPLICATIONS

Piezoelectricity from the Greek word piezo means pressure electricity. Certain crystalline substances generate electric charges under mechanical stress and conversely experience a mechanical strain in the presence of an electric field. The piezoelectric effect was discovered in some naturally occurring materials in the 1880s. However it was not until the Second World War that man-made polycrystalline ceramic ma‐ terials were produced that also showed piezoelectric properties. Quartz and other natural crystals found application in microphones, accelerometers and ultrasonic transducers, whilst the advent of...

SEDIMENT TRANSPORT PROCESSES AND THEIR MODELLING APPLICATIONS

Sediment Transport Processes and their Modelling Applications is a book which covers a wide range of topics. The effective management of many aquatic environments, requires a detailed understanding of sediment dynamics. This has both environmental and economic implications, especially where there is any anthropogenic involvement. Numerical models are often the tool used for predicting the transport and fate of sediment movement in these situations, as they can estimate the various spatial and temporal fluxes. However, the physi‐ cal sedimentary processes can vary quite considerably depending upon whether the local sediments are ...

ULTRA-WIDEBAND RADIO TECHNOLOGIE FOR COMMUNICATIONS, LOCALIZATION AND SENSOR APPLICATIONS

Sometimes history seems to repeat. Even in the so-called ‘mature’ technological fields. When the radio pioneers such as Heinrich Hertz, Guglielmo Marconi, and Alexander Stepanovich Popov made their first experiments of wireless transmission more than a hundred years ago using spark-gap transmitters with simple coherer-detectors they did not care which ‘frequency band’ they were using, nor did they worry about their signals being ‘spectrally efficient’ or ‘band limited’. The world of radio frequency regulation was very simple then since regulations have not yet existed. Over the years this has dramatically changed. The frequency band was subdivided into small ‘boxes’ of...

WIND TUNNEL DESIGNS AND THEIR DIVERSE ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS

Human efforts to conquer flight, land on the moon, go beyond the earth and discover new universes would have been difficult without the development of wind tunnels. The early 18th and 19th century aerodynamists used whirling arm to study various shapes which suf‐ fered from a major fault that the body under investigation was forced to fly in its own un‐ disturbed wake. This has lead to the development of wind tunnels to overcome the problem.

Bamboo furniture “Where western design meets indian tradition”

At the Kabupaten level, the average relative cash flow per worker is 74 million Rp (with 95% confidence limits of 70 to 78 million Rp), but the dispersion is high and the spatial heterogeneity among villages is considerable (Figure 18). In some villages, the added value per worker is less than 1 million Rp/year, while others produce more than 600 million Rp/year/worker. There is no clear explanation for the differences, as they are not obviously linked to either the industrial or spatial concentrations. The pattern probably reflects the existence of specialised businesses, scattered across the area. Further investigations are needed...
